La collection des Cahiers Léon-Provancher jette un regard neuf sur l’œuvre de l’abbé Léon Provancher [1820-1892], surnommé le Linné du Canada, un acteur important de l’histoire scientifique au Québec et en Amérique du Nord.
Cette collection :
- met en évidence certains aspects moins connus de son œuvre scientifique et de la place qu’il occupe dans la communauté savante de son temps, dans la tradition linnéenne;
- présente, de façon claire et rigoureuse, l’importance scientifique et historique de ses imposantes collections d’histoire naturelle (plantes, insectes, oiseaux, mollusques, etc.) qui ont échappées à la destruction et à l’oubli;
- rend accessible des manuscrits inédits et des correspondances échangées avec d’autres scientifiques nord-américains et européens dans l’arène politico-sociale de son temps;
- favorise et facilite de futures recherches inspirées par ce pionnier.
À l’exemple des cahiers consacrés à l’œuvre d’écrivains célèbres, tous les travaux sérieux de biologistes, d’historiens et d’autres « professionnels » se rapportant à la vie de l’abbé Léon Provancher, un bourreau de travail généreux et courageux qui exprime sans détour sa pensée, trouveront leur place dans les pages de ces cahiers. The Cahiers Léon-Provancher collection takes a fresh look at the work of FatherLéon Provancher [1820-1892], nicknamed Canada’s Linnaeus and a major player in the scientific history of Quebec and North America.
This collection:
- Highlights some lesser-known aspects of his scientific work and his place in the scholarly community of his time, in the Linnaean tradition.
- Presents, in a clear and rigorous manner, the scientific and historical importance of his impressive natural history collections (plants, insects, birds, molluscs, etc.), which have escaped destruction and oblivion.
- Makes accessible unpublished manuscripts and correspondence exchanged with other North American and European scientists in the political and social arena of his time.
- Encourages and facilitates future research inspired by this pioneer.
As with the notebooks devoted to the work of famous writers, all the serious work of biologists, historians and other ‘professionals’ relating to the life of Father Léon Provancher, a generous and courageous workaholic who spoke his mind, will find a place in the pages of these notebooks.
